HHI Builders is a design-build remodeler on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and aging-in-place design is part of what the design team plans for every day. The approach covers zero-entry showers, wider doorways, single-floor living and lighting designed for safety and comfort, all worked out at the design stage before construction begins.
A co-owner holds the NAHB CAPS (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist) credential, earned in 2025, which guides how these features are designed into a home. That makes HHI the only CAPS-certified remodeler in the Hilton Head and Bluffton area.
Single-floor living can be designed into most homes. The right approach depends on the current floor plan: sometimes it means relocating rooms, and sometimes it means a first-floor addition for new rooms.
What’s Included
Design, selections, construction and the workmanship warranty: one team, under one roof.
Design
Design starts with a discovery visit at your home, then moves into our design studio. Your designer develops the floor plan and elevations, walks you through them in 3D, and refines them with you until they are right. Design ends with a detailed estimate built from the finished drawings, which is what makes a fixed price possible.
Selections
Selections are made in the studio with your designer, not from a catalog on your own: cabinetry, counters, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting and hardware. Each choice is priced as you make it, so you always know where the number stands. When selections are complete they are locked into the contract, and that is why the price does not change.
Build
Once cabinets arrive, on-site work moves quickly since HHI can normally turn cabinets around in about two weeks, so the schedule is driven less by cabinet lead times and more by plumbing, electrical, and structural or foundation inspections where they apply. A project manager is on site daily, overseeing the subcontract crews doing the work and inspecting it internally before it's considered done. Town inspections are scheduled by the director of construction, and results are logged in the portal the same day, so you always know where the build stands.
Workmanship warranty
One-year workmanship warranty on every project, measured against the National Association of Home Builders' Residential Construction Performance Guidelines.
What does aging-in-place remodeling cost on Hilton Head Island?
Scoped individually
Aging-in-place work is scoped to your home and to how you live in it, so we do not publish a range for it. The estimator gives you a planning range for the rooms involved in about two minutes, and a 15-minute call turns that into a detailed, room-by-room estimate at one fixed price.
Questions Homeowners Ask
What does aging-in-place remodeling include?
Aging-in-place remodeling adapts a home so a homeowner can live safely and comfortably on one floor as needs change, without the house looking like a care facility. That can mean zero-entry showers, wider doorways, improved lighting, and reworking a layout for single-floor living, whether through relocating rooms or adding first-floor space. At HHI Builders, the work starts with a design agreement, followed by a fixed-price construction contract with no change orders. Design, selections, and construction carry forward from there, handled by the same design-build team on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Can my home be adapted for single-floor living?
Most homes can be adapted for single-floor living, though the right approach depends on the current floor plan. Sometimes it means relocating rooms to bring a bedroom, bathroom and laundry onto the main level. Other times it means adding first-floor space to make room for them. At HHI Builders, the design team works out which approach fits your home before construction begins. The process starts with a design agreement, then moves into a fixed-price construction contract with no change orders, so the plan for single-floor living is settled before the build starts.
What bathroom features make a home safer?
A zero-entry shower, a comfort-height toilet, grab bars placed where they're actually needed, and lighting designed for safety all make a bathroom safer, without making it feel clinical. Flooring choices matter too, since a safer bathroom needs a surface that stays sure underfoot when wet. At HHI Builders, a tub can be converted to a walk-in shower by relocating the plumbing to a floor drain, removing the tub, and rebuilding the shower with either an acrylic pan or a mud-set tiled pan. These features are worked out at the design stage, so the finished bathroom looks considered, not institutional.
Does aging-in-place design have to look clinical?
No. Aging-in-place design does not have to look clinical, and at HHI Builders it is built to look like the rest of a well-designed home. Features like zero-entry showers, wider doorways and single-floor living are worked out at the design stage, alongside the same selections process used on every project: finishes, fixtures and materials are chosen in the design studio and locked into the fixed price before construction starts. The goal is a home that works for how you live now and later, without looking adapted for it. Safety and comfort come from thoughtful layout and lighting choices, not from a clinical look.
